Branch Hours Update: Effective February 1, 2019

As a uniquely Alaskan credit union, every decision we make aims to best serve our local members and your Alaskan lifestyle! Thanks to feedback on the ways and times that our branches see the highest traffic, we’ll be updating our hours effective February 1:

    • On weekdays, all branch lobbies and drive-ups will open at 10am – excluding our Downtown Anchorage, Soldotna, Kodiak and Nome branches, which will continue to open at 9am.
    • In Fairbanks, our University Branch will be closed on Saturdays. Our 1st Avenue Branch will keep its regular Saturday hours of 10am-5pm.
    • Our Ketchikan Branch will be open from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays.

We look forward to seeing you! Visit Locations for a current list of branch hours and locations. The changes above will take effect on February 1, 2019.

Marijuana Related Business

Credit Union 1 has announced that it will initiate a pilot program to provide financial services to Marijuana Related Businesses (MRB). Since 2014 when marijuana was legalized in Alaska, the lack of financial services for MRBs has flooded local streets with cash, resulting in a community safety issue. Credit Union 1 hopes to help relieve this issue by providing financial services to MRBs. Note that Credit Union 1 will only provide services to legally operating businesses, and these MRBs will be under constant, comprehensive monitoring by our compliance team to ensure all aspects of their businesses stay legal.

It’s important to note that Credit Union 1 does not take a political or moral position on the legalization of marijuana by providing services to these businesses. When it comes to our members, we always seek to meet the financial needs of those we serve without judgment or prejudice – and as a state-chartered credit union that only serves Alaskans, we are in the best position to provide this service for MRBs. Credit Union 1 has a long history of providing services to the underserved, from helping individuals with lower credit scores get loans and other vital financial services; to being the first financial institution in over 23 years to open a branch in the Mountain View community of Anchorage. Now, we will again provide financial services to those who have nowhere else to go.

In 2018 alone, CU1 members and employees have fundraised and donated over $207,000 to Alaskan communities and volunteered over 5,100 hours to nonprofits in need. We have been recognized throughout on a national level for our efforts to support community-minded organizations and initiatives from soup kitchens to youth engagement organizations. To further support our Alaskan communities in 2019, we will donate a minimum of 1% of all profits received from our MRB pilot program to the #CU1LUV Community Fund.

CU1 Statement Upgrades

Credit Union 1 has upgraded the format of our paper and electronic statements! In December, you’ll notice a new look for this monthly mailing -- and our other letter-based communications have been upgraded as well. These changes will mean a better reading experience and less paper in your mailbox. WIN!

New Look: CU1 Credit and Debit Cards

Credit Union 1 is excited to share a special new look for our debit and credit cards! These cards each now sport a #CU1LUV emblem, to honor our commitment to lead change, uplift others and value people all across Alaska. Now, when you open a new spending or credit card account with us (or your existing card expires), you’ll receive this neat new design to swipe and enjoy.

Did you know that as a CU1 member, you earn One for All Rewards points each time you pay with your debit or credit card?

Supporting Small Businesses

At Credit Union 1, we’re proud to support Alaskan businesses! If you’re dreaming of small business ownership, we’d like to share a recent change to our documentation requirements. This federally required change, which took effect on May 11, 2018, will aid the government in fighting fraud and other financially-related crimes.

    • In the future, if you open a business account for a legal entity covered under this new regulation, we will ask you for identifying information (such as your name, address, date of birth and social security number) as well as identification documentation (such as your state ID, driver’s license or passport).
    • This info will be gathered for each individual that has 25% or more Beneficial Ownership in the legal entity, along with one individual that has significant managerial control (such as a CEO, President, CFO, VP, etc.).
    • Additionally, we’ll ask that you personally certify that this information is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge.

Already one of our valued CU1 business owners? At this time, we likely won’t need to collect this information if your business account was established with us prior to 2018. However, we may be required to collect certain info from you on a case-by-case basis in accordance with this new federal regulation. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

The #CU1LUV Community Fund

CU1 is excited to announce the launch of our new #CU1LUV Community Fund! This special fund serves as a way for Alaskans whose food, shelter or health is at risk to receive direct assistance from our credit union through a nonprofit organization.

The #CU1LUV Community Fund is supported by funds that Credit Union 1 donates on behalf of members who finance loans with us. For every consumer loan, we’ll donate $1 to this fund. For every real estate loan, we’ll donate $10. Now, when you finance a CU1 loan toward your own life goals – or refinance an existing loan to Credit Union 1 – you’re making a much larger impact on the lives of those around you. That’s #CU1LUV at work, and we’re grateful for your support!
